When Ace Hotel Sydney opens next year it’ll be the first of its kind in Australia. The boutique hotel chain announced it was opening a new property at 49–53 Wentworth Avenue, Sydney, way back in 2019, with a planned launch in 2021, but of course so much has changed since then. The good news is that from today you can make a booking for May 1, 2022 onwards for one of its beautifully designed rooms.

Ace Hotel Group has been leading the way in the ultra-cool five-star hotel space since it launched in Seattle in 1999. As with the group’s reputation around the world, the first property in Australia will have luxury fittings and hyper-local references in its interior design and architecture.

The new 18-storey hotel is being built on the site of a former brick factory, Tyne House, which was built in 1916 and is considered to be one of the first ceramic kilns in the country. The facade remains and the $350 million development will have 264 rooms, a ground-floor restaurant, bar and cafe in a communal lobby, and a rooftop restaurant and bar.

It’s being developed in partnership with Golden Age Group, which acquired the location in 2017. Fitzroy-based company Flack Studio have come onboard as the primary design partner for Ace Hotel Sydney, who are using the history of nearby Surry Hills – and the broader “cinematic colour palette of Australia” as inspiration for its look and feel. There’ll be textural straw walls in the guest rooms, tactile window seats and a striking ochre-red concrete staircase in its lobby.

“We wanted to preserve the creative, slightly renegade energy of the space since its origins as one of Australia’s early brickworks,” said founder and director of Flack Studio David Flack, in a statement. “We were committed to creating a warm space that brought together Australia’s cultural history with Ace’s unique, community cultivating approach to hospitality.”

Brad Wilson, president of Ace Hotel Group, told Broadsheet, “David’s eye for color and space is completely singular – a dream design collaborator for our first hotel in Australia.

“Planning’s already underway for a rich calendar of events at Ace Sydney, with programming partners from across the city helping us to highlight some of the most inspired culture in Australia. It’s a kind of communal cross-pollination our guests have really come to expect from Ace — from experiential art exhibitions to film screenings, book launches, culinary events, even long-running music festivals ... We activate our spaces so our neighbours know they have a place in Ace, and that in turn allows our guests to experience a genuine sense of place.”

Rooms start from $359 (high season). Reservations are open for May 1, 2022 onwards.
