Cassia

Tuesday
5:30pm - 9:30pm
5 Fort Lane Auckland 1010

Descend the stairs from Fort Lane into the subterranean dining room of contemporary Indian restaurant Cassia, and you’ll feel like you’ve left the city behind for a while – no matter what time of day you’re eating.

The space is textural and varied with exposed brick, sparkling lights strung along the length of the low ceiling and thick concrete beams along the bar. Tables are snug and close together, creating a lively vibe.

Restaurateurs Sid and Chand Sahrawat have had a hand in some of the city’s most acclaimed eateries, now heading up Sid at the French Cafe and the soon-to-open Kol. When they opened Cassia in 2014, it took modern Indian dining to an entirely new level – the likes of which hadn’t been seen before in Auckland.

Chef Sid creates menus that refocus the food he and Chand grew up with in India through a New Zealand lens – traditional Indian flavours and techniques using predominantly New Zealand produce and ingredients.

You'd never call it sedate, but Cassia is still a fantastic bet for a special occasion with two private dining rooms available – and the buzz of the main dining room is just as good a backdrop for a celebration, date night or family meal.
