Deli’s Continental, the pop-up that began at Rossonero run by two of the Maylands pizzeria’s pizza makers, is moving into a bigger and permanent space.
Come spring, pizzaolos and Deli’s Continental co-owners Stev Makhlouta and Aldo Putzu will be trading out of a deli next door to the new Woolworths Inglewood.
“It’s surreal when you think about it, but you try to play it cool because you don’t want to get too excited,” says Putzu.

While the two are excited about having their own venue, the focus for Deli’s Continental will remain the same: house-made deli goods at affordable prices. Although the 70-square-metre space will have seating for around 20 people, takeaway will still be the focus with most of the shop being given over to the kitchen.
The extra space will allow Putzu and Makhlouta to continue with their controlled growth. Among the things the duo is hoping to (slowly) introduce: more filled rolls and focaccias, cookies, and American-style pies. The pair will also introduce tray-style pizzas – think a Long Island-inspired grandma slice pizza – as well as thin, biscuity Roman-style pizzas, both sold by the portion. Factor in the diner’s existing suite of continental rolls, doorstopper-like focaccias, and ham and cheese toasties, and you’re looking at all the makings of the perfect lunch stop.
“We want Deli’s to be the spot you go because you know you’re going to get a really good feed,” says Makhlouta. “All we’ve been trying to do for the last year is build a good reputation. Aldo and I just want people to come in and have a good local spot. That’s what delis should be.”
The extra space will also allow the pair to ramp up the production of their pickles, conserva and other house-made sauces and bottle them for takeaway.
Deli’s Continental ceased trading at Rossonero in July. In the lead-up to the opening of the new Inglewood store, Makhlouta and Putzu are staging weekend pop-ups to trial potential menu items.
Deli’s Continental is slated to open at 861 Beaufort Street, Inglewood in spring.
