Super Whatnot

4:00pm - 10:00pm
48 Burnett Lane Brisbane 4000

As an inner city bar, Super Whatnot shouldn’t work. It’s not really visible from the street and the chart-eschewing music policy is the polar opposite to most other CBD bars.

There’s a sign at the entrance offering a brief outline of this philosophy, but the best way to understand is by stepping inside. But possibly because of the quirky sensibilities of the people who make it tick (think: chalkboard tally of doppelganger personalities maintained lovingly by bar staff), somehow it just all falls into place.

The interior – an award-winner in 2012 from architects Marc&Co – includes a sunken dining area, perfect for a quick meal from the short and snacky menu (in winter particularly, the 12-hour braised beef burritos are a must).

Upstairs on the mezzanine, try a cocktail or perhaps something from bar’s rotating craft beer selection. The three taps change daily, with a focus on local and national microbrews.

Crowds peak between 5 and 6pm with after work and pre-dinner drinkers. Most nights you’ll hear the soothing crackle of vinyl spun by Brisbane’s finest hip hop, soul and disco DJs and those who stay into the night will discover that although there isn't a designated dance floor, one may appear anyway.
