Sri Lanka is a land of contrasts. Wild beauty, ancient towns, tea plantations, gorgeous beaches, ultra-modern cities – and excellent food everywhere you turn.
Broadsheet and G Adventures are teaming up to help you discover it for yourself. We’re sending you and a friend on an eight-day guided trip from Negombo to Unawatuna, flights and accommodation included.
On your first day, check into a hotel in Negombo, home to relaxing beaches, winding canals, delicious fish markets and historic churches and forts.
Broadsheet Access members get special tables at busy restaurants, tickets to exclusive events and discounts on food, coffee, brand offers and more.
Find out moreOn your second, prepare for a drive to Kandy in a private vehicle, scanning the local scenery and visiting a spice plantation on the way. After a traditional Sri Lankan lunch, take a guided tour of the Temple of the Tooth, where a tooth of the Buddha is stored in a golden casket. There’s also the option to see a Kandyan cultural dance. Day three is open to explore Kandy, a lush and hilly city famous for its public parks and gardens.
From Kandy you’ll travel to Ella by car, stopping en route for some free time in the historic town of Nuwara Eliya. Once in Ella, spend two nights at Amba Estate, an organic tea plantation and guesthouse where you’ll learn about traditional hand-rolling techniques for tea and enjoy some local mouth-watering cuisine. And of course, you’ll get to taste some of the farm’s famous tea.
On your second day in Ella, use your free time to hike to the picturesque Ella Rock or visit the town by tuktuk. As evening arrives, a cooking demonstration will highlight savoury and sweet dishes in the home-style Sri Lankan tradition.
After a home-cooked breakfast at Amba Estate, day six of the tour will take you to Udawalawe National Park, where you’ll enjoy an afternoon wildlife safari and a visit to the Elephant Transfer Home, which rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves for release. Then settle into a tented camp by the lake and indulge in a barbeque dinner around the campfire, right on the edge of the national park.
Before your final night with the group, you’ll travel by bus to Galle, where you’ll take in the city’s enduring Dutch architecture and the 16th-century Portuguese fort. Then head south to your final local destination of Unawatuna, home to rope swings, prime surfing spots, the Japanese Peace Pagoda and the nearby Sea Turtle Farm and Hatchery.
Finish your tour with a hotel breakfast before heading to Colombo airport at your leisure.
